2026 Subaru Outback: A New Era of Versatility
September 20 2024 - Subaru of Ontario Staff

The 2026 Subaru Outback is a big leap forward for one of our most popular models. As a pioneer in the crossover segment, the Outback has been known for its ruggedness, practicality, and comfort for decades. In its 7th generation, the 2026 model gets many updates to make it even more appealing to outdoor enthusiasts and daily drivers alike.

Exterior Redesign: New Look
The 2026 Subaru Outback’s exterior is a big change from the past. While it still looks like a station wagon/SUV hybrid, it’s bolder and more aggressive. According to early renderings, the 2026 model will have a more angular front fascia with thinner LED headlights and a reworked grille that matches Subaru’s new design language.

The cladding around the wheel arches, a signature of the Outback’s off-road capability, is now more streamlined and gives the vehicle a more refined yet rugged look. The overall size of the Outback is expected to be similar to the current generation so it will still have plenty of ground clearance and presence on the road. The redesign is not just for looks, but functional too with improvements in aerodynamics to improve fuel efficiency and handling.

Interior: Techy and Roomy
Subaru has always been known for its practical and user-friendly interiors and the 2026 Outback is no different. Early reports say the new model will have a more techy cabin with advanced infotainment systems and premium materials throughout. The central infotainment screen is expected to be bigger, likely a 12.3-inch touchscreen, up from the current 11.6-inch screen. This bigger screen will run the latest version of Subaru’s Starlink system with smartphone integration, navigation, and vehicle settings.

Passenger comfort is still a priority with the Outback still offering plenty of legroom and headroom in the front and rear seats. Cargo space is expected to be similar to the current model’s 32.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats but Subaru may make minor design changes to improve usability and storage. The rear seats will still fold flat to accommodate bigger items and further prove the Outback’s practicality.

Premium trims will be more refined with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. A panoramic sunroof will be available on higher trims to make the cabin feel more open and airy.

Performance and Engine
Subaru hasn’t released official engine specs for the 2026 Outback yet but it’s expected to carry over the same engine options as the current model with some updates for efficiency and performance. The current base engine is a 2.5 liter naturally aspirated flat-four that produces 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This engine will likely get some minor updates for better fuel economy and may add hybrid technology to meet stricter emissions standards.

The 2.4 liter turbocharged flat-four that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque will also carry over to the 2026 model. This engine has been well-received for its balance of power and efficiency and is a popular choice for those who want a more responsive driving experience. Both engines will likely still be paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) and the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

Since Subaru is committed to electrification, a plug-in hybrid version of the Outback could be offered by 2026. This fits with the brand’s overall plan to electrify its lineup to meet global regulations and consumer demand for more eco-friendly options.

Safety and Driver Assistance
Subaru has always been about safety and the 2026 Outback will be no different. The EyeSight driver assistance system which is now standard across the Subaru lineup will likely get updates. The new system will include improved adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.

New for 2026 could be a 360-degree camera system which will give the driver a complete view of their surroundings, very useful for off-road and tight parking situations. Subaru may also introduce more advanced semi-autonomous driving features so the Outback can take care of certain driving tasks in specific conditions like highway cruising.

Advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking will be available on higher trims. The Outback vehicle has always had top safety ratings from agencies like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the 2026 model will likely continue that trend with the latest safety features.

Off-Road Capabilities: Staying True to Its Roots
The Subaru Outback has always been about off-road and the 2026 model will continue to be for those who want a vehicle that can handle rough terrain. Subaru’s X-Mode off-road driving assist system will return with updates to improve traction on slippery surfaces like mud, snow, and gravel. Dual-function X-Mode which includes settings for deep snow and mud will be standard on higher trims so drivers have more control in tough conditions.

Ground clearance will likely remain at 8.7 inches so the vehicle can handle obstacles with ease. The all-wheel-drive system combined with Subaru’s advanced traction control will keep the Outback stable and in control in any condition.

Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact
As the industry moves towards more eco-friendly vehicles the 2026 Subaru Outback will likely have better fuel efficiency. The current model has a competitive fuel economy for its class with an EPA rating of up to 33 mpg on the highway. Subaru will likely improve these numbers in the new model possibly through hybrid technology or more efficient internal combustion engines.

Subaru is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles and the 2026 Outback will likely follow suit. The use of sustainable materials in the cabin and improved manufacturing processes will likely reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint. Also, Subaru is working on electric and hybrid powertrains so an electrified Outback may be in the future and consumers will have a greener option without sacrificing performance or capability.

Trim Levels and Pricing
The 2026 Subaru Outback will likely come in several trim levels from base to more luxurious Limited and Touring trims. Pricing has not been announced but the base model will likely start around $30,000 and the fully loaded models will be around $45,000. Subaru’s pricing has always been competitive and the 2026 Outback vehicle will offer great value for its features, capability, and safety.

So the 2026 Subaru Outback will be a strong contender in the crossover class. Performance, tech, and a comfortable cabin for all. The Outback legacy continues.
